It's not just the thread that is stopping the manufacturers from allowing you to restitch the seat after an
airbag deploys....it's the density of the stitch, the compromised seat cover (already blown out once) and the fact that they may become laible if you do it wrong.
There are always shortcuts to repairing cars (and guys to do it), but when it comes to
airbag systems and saving my family's life, I'd rather trust the manufacturer of the system than the local tailor.
As far a
scanners go to reset the systems, there are a number of them available. To determine which scanner you need, you need to define which vehicle make you are working on. This is a different scanner than the one Auto Zone uses for the 'check engine' light.
