93 Camaro? good or not?

Going to go check out a 93 Z28 today. Was wondering if there are any major faults that I should be looking for? Thanks

Re: 93 Camaro? good or not?

leaking water pump = opti-spark (distributer) death.

All things aside, no different from any other used car, pull all of the sticks and caps and check the fluids out. This will tell how the car's been kept and if there's anything hidden, ie engine oil that looks dirty, or has been secretly replaced with gear lube to silence a knock.

And of course with any subframe car, get down on the ground and make sure there isn't any rust eating away at vital areas of teh underbody.

If it's a t-top car look for signs of leaks.

Check for creases in the rear quarter panels. Those are usually a good indication of hard abuse over the years from hard launches and such.

Or from spinning out while doing a buck 20 like my friend did to his '95Z.
(Don't ask me how it did't get totaled)

Re: 93 Camaro? good or not?

Check the trans. and motor mounts too. Those can be some pretty good signs of what the car has been through. With the tight tolerances late model motors run I doubt ant gear oil has been put in the crankcase but definately check all of the fluids. I would also make sure to take a peek under the dash at the wiring, nothing invasive, just make sure somebody didn't get stereo system happy and leave a mess. That goes with all cars but there is not much room to work in a Camaro at all! I would make sure if it has power windows, that they go up and down easy. Check the doors to see if the bushings are worn and make sure they line up good. I bet I've bought and sold about 10 of these cars and it seems like each previous owner neglects them in a different way. I've actually seen Z28s that were super mechanically sound that the last owner never really took care of the cosmetics. I would also be very cautious of cars that are modified in any way. Some peoples idea of high performance is borderline jury rigged death trap unsafe, or just hinders the value and performance of the car to the point that the car is not worth having. Believe it or not a really good indicator of a cars condition is the interior. After being neglected for so long a cars interior is pretty hard to get back into shape. I love these cars, but with any V8 sports car there is always the possibilty that somebody flogged it way too hard its whole life. It's really a crap shoot. It can look perfect on the lot but give it about 2 weeks and all of the little stuff will start to rear its ugly head. Just go over the whole thing with a fine tooth comb and make sure you feel like you get what you are paying for.

Noisy Rear end, water pump leaking, ignition miss (from faulty opti) are just a few usual issue's. You should be aware that 93 is a odd ball year for LT1 f-bodys with many parts that are specific to that year and that make it slightly more difficult when modding.
