Fan Speed Dial

My fan speed dial only works on High.
Anyone know what the problem could be?

99 Camry CE V6.
Blows smoke on startup. I had a garage look at the compression to diagnose weather it was the rings or valves.
When it came back the fan speed dial only worked on high.

Dan.

Re: Fan Speed Dial

For the fan speed, check the blower motor resistor pack. This is the most common part that fails and results in the loss of the lower fan speeds. Follow the wiring from the blower motor (under the passenger side of the dash) and you will see the resistor pack in the blower motor housing. It's usually held in by 1 screw. Remove the wiring connector to it and then remove the screw and take the resistor pack out. Take it to the dealer to match it up with the new part. I believe this is a dealer only part. It should run about $50-$60. It really shouldn't be related to doing a compression check. I would have to assume it's just a coincidence.

Re: Fan Speed Dial

A common reason for smoke at startup is worn valve guide seals. One odd thing. My 87 did the same thing for a couple years. I would see blue smoke for 2 to 3 minutes at startup. Not a lot of smoke but, enough for me to notice it. No smoke the rest of the day. Then after a few years it stopped.

You might see your resistor block in the factory manual listed in the "Factory Service Manuals" thread at the top of the forum.
