1991 No brake lights!?!?! Confusedbdahlg 11-02-2007, 04:42 PM I have a 1991 Cherokee Laredo 4.0L with 153,000+. I recently discovered while backing out of my driveway one night that there are no brake lights. I did the obvious and replaced the bulbs but of course that did nothing. I then read a few threads about a faulty brake light switch so I replaced that but no dice. I have checked all the fuses and to my knowledge, there is no seperate brake light fuse on my model.:screwy: I would love to check the juice but do not have a meter at hand since I am up at school. Any suggestions? Need to drive to and from school 2+ hours. Please help! dave92cherokee 11-02-2007, 06:37 PM Check the connector at the back of the jeep. On my 92 sport it's on the driver side behind the plastic shield. If the spare tire is there take it off, lay the back seat down, take off the top cross piece at the back, then the back corner piece can be loosened up enough and pulled out to check in the corner at the connector. There might be a grounded wire or the connector might have come unplugged somehow. bdahlg 11-02-2007, 11:15 PM Thanks Dave, I will check that out tomorrow. Related question: would a faulty NSS have anything to do with my brake lights not working, since my reverse lights are definitely intermittent. I am guessing not since the brake lights are operated from the switch. I might as well throw it out just for reference reasons. I was also thinking about saving myself some trouble of following wires (if any) and just splice into the brake light switch (if it has juice) and run it all the way back to the brake lights (after following dave92cherokee's suggestion?) Will it save time/is it worth it? Thanks for any input...:runaround: citizen@large 11-05-2007, 01:46 PM If you're going to run new wires anyway, it just makes sense to at least test for power at the origional connections anyway. prolly need a helper to hit the pedal for ya. Or a stick. bdahlg 11-06-2007, 02:28 AM Just followed up with 92cherokee's input. Still nothing. Checked all the contacts on every harness I could find. No split or broken wires anywhere. Could it be the actual sockets?(because if go through the trouble of running new wires, I'm going to want them to work :grinyes:.) Is there definitely no fuse? I still haven't had the chance to find voltage on anything. I forgot to mention there are trailer hitch wires, but it seems that everything has been diconnected all around the car. Probably should take it out soon... Anything I'm overlooking? bdahlg 11-12-2007, 03:45 AM I seemed to have overlooked completing the circuit; brake light circuit had no power at the switch. Re-connected it to a hot wire and there are the familiar brake lights I have been longing to see. Easy fix, should've started with the basics and worked my way up.
