'86 Jimmy Transmission Question

Hi
I'm brand new to this forum and had a few questions.
I recently recieved an 86 s15 jimmy with a new engine that has 64,000 miles. The previous owner was under the impression that the car was on it's last legs.

When I drive it there seems to be very little power and rpms are really high before it changes gears (sometimes pretty violently) futhermore when I start to coast it up shifts too early and I end up getting that vibration from the rpms being too low. (As if it were a stick and I just put it in 4th from 2nd.)
any Ideas?
Thanks

Re: '86 Jimmy Transmission Question

Welcome to AF,
First thing is fluid level and condition.
Check TV cable and adjustment.
If TV cable is hooked up and adjusted good.
Go for a pan drop and new filter and have a look at the governor.
Check plastic gear on end and for a sticking governor weight.

And also remember the engine has to be running good for the transmission to work right.
