97 4x4 blazer shift/acceleration problems

My husband recently bought a 97 Blazer. It runs great as long as it is in 1st and he has to run through the gears manually. It is an automatic with 4 wheel drive. I am sure this isn't normal but I don't think he wants to admit he might have bought a problem. Any ideas on what might be the problem?

Re: 97 4x4 blazer shift/acceleration problems

Does the SES, (Service Engine Soon) light come on when the key is turned to the RUN position before starting the engine? Does the SES light turn off after the engine is running? If it works, and if it stays on, Autozone and Advance Auto Parts will retrieve the DTC's, (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) at no charge. Write them down and post them here. If the SES light works and turns off after the engine is running, changing the transmission fluid and filter MIGHT help. If not, have a transmission shop take a look at it.
