No Electrical Power! None,0 Natta 97 Jimmy

Please help, Went to start my Jimmy and had NO electrical power,when I went to try and remove key from ignition won't come out. key won't rotate back far enough everything is locked up,key, brakes, and shifter. have no power at all. replaced battery,checked all grounds and still no luck. Any and all ideas would be appreciated, Please help!!!! pags20

I would say this is also the ignition swtich and/or related wiring. Very common on the '97's for some reason. This sounds like that is the case.

We have come across this often. It always ends up being a power problem. Check your connections at the starter. That's where the power leaves the battery cable and begins it's journey through the car.
This is not a key or steering column problem. It's not usually an ignition switch problem either.
Without power, your key / shift interlock won't let the key come out.
Without power, your vehicle will not start
Trace out the power from the 'new' battery with a test light & see where it stops. It's not getting to the rest of the truck.

Yeah probably jumped the gun. i did the same thing in antoher post here too. If you don't have power to things such as interior lighting or power locks don't work, then you need to trace most likly battery cables, conntections to see if they are alright. The ignition switch or its wiring idea is assuming your getting power to the truck in general. hope I didn't have you doing this--->runaround

Thanks to all that responded.I will start new and try and trace power from battery before I dig into the column. pags20

Thank you Doug. I will try and trace the power from battery to starter and so on before I tackle the column. pags20

Well I tried everything that previouse post reccomended.Battery good,Cables all good connections all good. Still have no power! Someone was telling me about a. afuse box under the hood as well as a fusable link. Stupid me but I can't find either under the hood.Can anyone lead me in the right direction on this one? What might be my next course of action? Please help. Thanks pags20

Do you have remote start, or aftermarket alarm system?

If so, check for in-line fuse, or a switch to disarm/arm under the dash.
Might also be a switch mounted to the fan shroud area that activates when the hood is opened.

Otherwise, I'd have to guess a bad cable from the starter to the junction block on the left fender well.

Thanks for the advice. I have no aftermarket items of any kind. I am still having a problam locating any kind of fuse block or fusable link under the hood. pags20

Hey gang
I replaced my starter 6 months ago, A friend spoke to a friend that is a GM employee and they said that it could be attributed to the starter or fusable link. Does anyone else agree that it could be a faulty starter? pags20

Thanks for the info. Once I get the starter back in I will check that. After that I will be flying by the seat of my pants!!!!!

No need to reinstall the starter just for testing. In fact, it will probably be easier to test it with the starter removed. Connect a voltmeter right to the larger cable. If you have battery voltage there, check the battery MegaFuse. 175 amp fuse inside lower RH side of radiator support below the battery. It must have battery voltage on each side of the fuse. At the battery positive terminal there are two cables. One cable goes directly to the starter solenoid and is not fused in any way, it has voltage at all times. The second cable goes through the MegaFuse and supplies voltage for everything else on the vehicle. If that fuse is open, only the starter solenoid will have voltage to it, nothing else. (The ignition switch cannot energize the solenoid if the MegeFuse is open.)
