93 Fuel Problem?

My 93 Grand Cherokee has been acting strange lately. Sometimes I smell a gas smell around my jeep and lately I have noticed black residue on my rear bumper by the exhaust pipe. The engine is my main concern, it is a pain lately. Most days it starts up just fine, other times it does not want to start. It rotates, just doesn't catch. Eventually, on 3rd try usually, if I push down on the accel then try to start it, it will run. Another note, once in awhile, the check engine light will come on when started. Then I shut it off, restart the motor, and it doesn't light up. This occured around the same time as the fuel problem. Also, recently when I tried to fire the engine just after shutting it down, the starter was dead. No click, nothing! Let engine cool down then worked.

Thanks

lets start with the fuel issue, i'd say either bad pump or there's a small hose on top that may be cracked, check that b4 you buy a pump. starter issue may be loose wire bad solenoid or starter itself. let us know.

I was wondering on someones opinion if leaking injectors could be causing the problem. The starter seems to be good and the injectors itself are firing okay, maybe a leak? Someone also told me that my coolant sensor could be wrecked and that would tell the computer to send more gas to engine.

Thanks
