Starting Issues...

Hey Guys! I have a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix with 51,000 miles. It has the 3.8L engine. (non-supercharged)

Okay, so now I have a new problem and I'm not sure what's going on...when this first started happening, I didn't think it was a big deal, because it only happened about once every week. Now it happens about every other day.

When I go to start the car (cold start), sometimes the car will start and then sputter and die. I wait about 10 seconds, and then turn the key over again. The starter stays engaged for about 3 seconds while the engine is cranking (even though I let go of the key it continues trying to start) and then it will finally start. It does the same thing when I used the remote start. When I start the car after I have been driving it, it works fine.

Should I check the fuel pressure? If so, what should it be? Is this something I am going to have to worry about? Will it get worse?

Re: Starting Issues...

It sounds like a malfunctioning remote start. Is this a factory remote start, or an aftermarket/dealer add-on unit?

This is the factory remote start. I have to mention that it does this when I start it regularly (without remote start) and when I started it with the remote.

It sounds like the PK3 system is bad or your BCM is faulty. Have you ever seen the security light on?

No, I have never seen the security light on. It started happening more frequently after the dealer did a reprogramming for a recall. All I know that they did was recalibrate the SDM (sensing and diagnostic module). It dealt with the seatbelt reminder and the remote start feature. Could this have messed it up?

Re: Starting Issues...

Yeah I'd take it back. They could have accidently messed with some sort of parameter they shouldn't have.

Re: Starting Issues...

I had a similar problem on my 04 model and have encountered it on quite a number of GM drive by wire throttle body vehicles coming into the shop. A good cleaning of the throttle body cured my problem (and the others as well). This seems to be the cause of many cold/hot start and stall issues on the 04 and up models.
