CV Boot and Axle

Novice here needing some advice...

Both CV boots are torn on my 95 camry (119k) and I am hearing the clicking noise. Mechanic recommends replacing both axles ($200 each).

My questions are:
1.) Is this something I definitely need to have replaced for safety reasons?
2.) Does $200 per axle sound reasonable.
3.) Immediate fix? or something that is okay to drive on for a couple more months?

Thanks in advance for any comments.

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Immediate. IMHO safety items alway comes first. Anything that effects your ability to steer is a safety item.

Answers:

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. I would not do it.

Axle is what moves your wheels. CV is constant velocity joint. Clicking sound means cv is bad (probably but not necessarily because dirt got in it due to the torn boot). It may fall appart and then it is going to cost you repair plus towing plus head ache.

Good luck,

Sam

Yes X 3.

If you had noticed the boots were torn before you heard the clicking you could have gotten away with just changing the boots using split boots with no need to pull the axles. About $25 with 2 hours of your labor. Are both sides clicking? You may just need to change one axle.
