Impala LS 2001 struts and shocks

I have Impala 2001 LS and 80 k on it. It is good. But on exits and bridges I have shakes under the car on the right and left, like metal shakes somewhere above of front wheels. It is not good. Sounds like strots ans shocks gone?
Guys can you tell me is it time to replace for the first time my shocks and strotys on this car? How it is done? Can I replace them myself without the shop, or it is possible to do only in the shop? Any experiences with this kind of problem?
Pl let me know.

Re: Impala LS 2001 strots and shocks

The upper strut nuts may just be loose -- it's easy to check them and make sure they're tight -- the upper rubber/poly bushings may also be worn or broken, so check them while you're there.

It's strange for both struts (they are the "shocks") to cause issue at the same time unless "mechanic intervention" left something loose after servicing a related issue.

Check simple things: Equal tire pressure L/R in the front is very important -- low tire pressure will cause wheel shake as well.

If the shaking is under braking, the rotors may be warped -- the stock Impala rotors are a common problem area -- don't let anyone resurface them (this "fix" won't last long), just replace them.

Sounds more like the struts are worn out especially if they are the originals or never replaced. Since you have 80K miles the struts are most likely due for replacement.

You can do the struts DIY. The only special tool required is a strut coil spring compressor to remove the springs after the strut has been removed from the car. After the work is done the alignment should be checked.
