Wiper Delay Unit - How to hook up?

Hi all,
Several years ago, I purchased an add on wiper delay unit from JC Whitney
for my 85 Chevy Van. It did not come with any instructions or wiring diagram
on how to hook it up which is probably why I never installed it.

Can anyone help to identify the wires or provide instruction on how
to hook this up to my 85 Chevy Van?

Below is a pic of the unit and the wires involved.
Also, notice the yellow wire which is much shorter than all the others
wires and also has an alligator clip. That's odd. What's that for???

BLACK.....
RED........

WHITE....
BLUE.......
GREEN.....

YELLOW...

I'm also wondering, if there is a relay in the original wiper motor
circuitry or do I connect the wires of this unit direct to the motor,
once I have the wires of the delay unit identified.

PS: I have no idea who manufactures this Wiper Delay Unit.
Says.. Made in Taiwan R.O.C.

Yes I can help you, but I need to know you're still there and watching before I post a big detailed thing.

Let me know you're there and I'll do it. Got one in the old '75 Vandura and just dug out the instructions for it.

Yes, stickman, I'm here.

Strange I was not notifed by Email that you had responded.
My User Options are set for Instant Email Notification.

What's also odd is that had this page open on my browser for 2 days after
posting it and kept reloading the page to see if anyone responded and
I saw no responses. I guess that method won't work here.

I certainly will appreciate any help you can give me.

Ok, no big hurry, I've had this thing for a few years now, so what's
a few more days?

In the meantime, I need to do some body work and painting.
Can someone please direct me to the best forum here where
I can discuss bodywork and painting issues. Thanks.

Re: Wiper Delay Unit - How to hook up?

Pete:

1. The yellow wire w/clip is used as a ground in conjunction with the red wire for 12v circuit testing in the event you don't have a test light or other means to test voltage on wires. The indicator light on the unit will light up when you find 12v on the wire you're looking for. When you're done or if you don't need it for testing then just cut it off and tape it up.

2. red=12v ignition fused (radio, wipers, etc) power
black=ground

3. Now comes the fun part!!

3a. Find and disconnect the wiring connector for the wiper motor. All the following tests will be done on the switch (not motor) side of the connector.

3b. Turn the key to "run" and wiper sw to off and check for 12v on any wire. If you find 12v on any wire with the wiper sw off, eliminate this wire for now.

3c. With the key in "run" turn the wiper sw to "low" and find the wire with 12v. Check all wires in the plug. If more that 1 wire shows 12v then turn the sw to "high". If one of the wires shows 12v on "high & low" this is a common wire and you will use this one. If you have just one wire showing 12v in "low" then you will use this one. What we're trying to find is if there is one signal for the low and one for the high or if it is a common signal for both.

3d. The wire you find in 3c needs to be cut. Splice the "green" wire from the unit to the sw side. Splice the "white" wire from the unit to the motor side.

3e. Now all you have left is the "blue" wire. So install the unit as described above. If the blades don't go to park with the unit operating let me know and we'll look at where the "blue" wire should go. (3 wire vs 4 wire) connector.

Whew!! Now I'm going to watch my NASCAR cup race which a friend just called and said was rained out..............Steve

Re: Wiper Delay Unit - How to hook up?

Update:
I attempted to hook up the wiper delay unit using the procedure
that stickman provided. Unfortunately, the wiper motor is positioned
in such a manner where I'd have to remove it just to be able to
discconect the wire connector. Now it becomes a big job.

Since that wiper motor is so old I'm going to buy another wiper
motor and when I replace the old one I'll tackle this wiper delay
project again.

I just got done restoring the body and repainting the van.
Check it out...

Stay tuned!
