fuel/air mixture ratio

Have been reading my automotive book on engine fuel system and came across this word Lambda, sometimes it says lambda (λ=1.6) What does this mean?Does this represent weak or rich mixture range?? My car has rough idling and trying to read about the operation of the engine fuel mixture ratios.Great answers would be highly appreciated! Thanks.
