4wheel hi won't engage

I have a 01 S-10 Crew Cab, can shift to 4 wheel low ok.. but when you try to go to 4 wheel hi the light doesnt light and it stays in 2 wheel hi, the light on 4 wheel hi will flash when in netural and shifting to 4 wheel low. when shifting from 4 wheel low back to 4 wheel hi it goes right back to 2 wheel hi.....this is v6 with auto trans. and dash mounted electric shift. 29.000 miles. has not been used Off-Road or Mud ETC. hiway driven only.. the 4 wheel hi has worked in the past I checked the fuse it was ok, not sure if the 4wheel hi is Engaged in the transfer case or just the front diff, is locked by a solenoid (there is a sol. in the front Diff.) Qwner manual has very little info on 4 wheel drive. TY
