Check engine light p0440 replaced by p0300

2000 corolla with 80000 miles.

In July of 2006 a few days after a oil change My check engine light came up with codes

P0440 EVAP Control System.
P0441 EVAP Control System Improper Purge Flow.

I think first time it was P0440. They said that the carbon canister should to be replaced, but will run fine if not replaced. I got it reset and the again in a few weeks I saw both the codes, reset and came up again then did not reset.

Then in September 2006, the light went off by itself.
Symptom: When the check engine light first came on, I noticed that sometimes I will hit the gas paddle but the car would not move. This usually would happen right after starting the engine and when the car is (almost) still. Then I will release and push slowly and it will start moving ok.

In November 2006 when I mentioned the above symptoms they suggested I get the fuel system cleaned up (flushed) and I did. They had also suggested that I replace the filter which they did not as it is inside the tank. Well the symptom did not go away immediately but eventually in a moth or so it did.

The symptom returned one early April day, after the blow cleaned the parking area off of the sand/ salt from the winter days: – maybe what was cleaned became dirty again???????

Then in July 2007 while driving on a highway, the muffler lost a bolt fell down and got some rubbing on the road until I could park on the shoulder. A week from that the check engine light came back on again. I assumed it’s the same code but not sure.

The mechanic reset it and said it needed new spark plugs etc and it will be ok to use until I decide to fix. Well I kept driving.

After driving for 1000 miles, the light came back on recently with code P0300 twice (Random multiple cylinder misfire). I hear a lot of noise when driving slightly uphill and seem to need a lot of pushing on the gas paddle. Sometime the car shakes right after starting (idle) – gets ok if I turn off and back on again.

P0300 Random Misfire.
So, now I do not have p0440/p0441 anymore for more than a year but have p0300. Are they related or p0300 maybe related to my muffler falling down> I hear these are the most challenging codes.

Any advice/suggestions.

Re: Check engine light p0440 replaced by p0300

The noise seem have been coming from a leaking exhaust manifold gasket (donut gasket) and is now fixed. Any Idea if that could have fixed the real problem? (P0300: Random Cylinder Misfire.)
