2000 Grand Am shuts off driving down the road

Daughter has 2000 Grand AM that has been shutting itself off while driving down the road. Prior to this the Service Vehicle Soon light had been on, but was off when it died. Unable to restart car. Waited approximately 20 minutes and then tried it again. Towed the car home and couldn't find anything electrically wrong with it. Started back up. Drove about 5 miles with cruise on and saw the tach drop off to zero. Tried to restart it and it turns over, but the engine won't fire. Towed back home again...by the time got it pulled back up on the dolly with a come along, it started. What do I do now?

What engine and how many miles are on the car?
Anything been replaced recently ??

I'd say when it is running go get it scanned with a scan tool.
This will most likly reveal clues to what might be going wrong.

and Welcome to AF.

It has approximately 134,000 miles, V6. Haven't had to do much of anything to it. Replaced an A/C line and water pump about 2 months ago.

Yeah could be fuel filter too.
Get the fuel pressure checked, should be between 41-47PSI.

Re: 2000 Grand Am shuts off driving down the road

Just went out again after replacing the 7X CPS. And guess what happened? Able to drive approximately 5 miles then it shuts down. Takes approximately 9-10 minutes for it to restart....usually. Do not hear the fuel pump start up when key is in on position after it dies. So where is the wire harness to the fuel pump....on the driver's side?

Re: 2000 Grand Am shuts off driving down the road

Damage is usually close to the tank .... from removing the tank. Just trace the wires back from the tank.

Good Hunting!

Re: 2000 Grand Am shuts off driving down the road

The harness for the pump is right at the tank and travels forward about 4 feet till it meets the harness from the engine. Not saying this is your problem but when we had the car up when we moved the harness at the pump (tank) the pump went on. Thats what made me change it. Iv'e had other start complaints due yo fuelpump or injector shutoff but that was because of PASSLOCK. Good Luck keep in touch. You need a group therapy with these GAs.
