I found a 1983 Porsche 944 and need some help on an offer. It has a great body, interior is in fair condition, about 130,000 miles. He thinks he burt the clutch out because it won't shift, and hasn't driven it in about 6 months or more. What should I offer him? Could the clutch be the only problem?

When I bought my 84 944 it looked like crap on the outside, the interior was awsome, and the only problems the owner told me about was the body (of course) and power steering fluid leaks. I bought mine for $2250.00. If you say the appearance is good and the clutch is the only "known" problem, I'd give it about $4000.00. But you gotta remember, that's NOT the only problem. It never is. I had to fork out an additional $3000.00 or so to make mine run like new again. The power steering problem was fixed for about $300.00 by replacing the steering rack. That's what I was expecting. If I were you, I'd do some research... and maybe offer him a deal. Tell him that you'll buy if he can prove that's the only problem. Take it to a Porsche specialist and have it looked at. The expenses on taking a look won't cost you much. Tell him that if the car has more problems than he told you about, then either drop the price or refund you the cost of the inspection and look somewhere else. I once looked at a Ford Probe Turbo that looked like it had never been touched and I was offered a deal @ $2000.00. I made a similar deal with him and it turned out that the turbo was blown, the fuel pump needed to be replaced, and an additional $2000.00 or so on miscellaneous fixes... I told him to cut the price down to subtract the cost of the fuel pump and he told me no.. so I gave him the receipts for the inspection and he payed me back and I walked. Just be careful for those "only problems" when buying a car, especially a Porsche!

Good luck though!
