4.3 low on power... ideas???

So I have a 94 4.3 4x4 w/ 170k on the clock... I has very little power and can't do 65 pulling my new trailer.... Its about used up so I don't want to put much money into it... any ideas for getting another year outta it without putting to much $$$ in it.
I"ve done a few things already
plugs wires cap and rotor
fuel filter and new pump too
It doesn't use much oil so I don't think its the rings...
Can I set the timing and maybe jack it up a bit on this truck?
Anyone have luck cutting off the cat? I was going to but it was gonna be hard to weld in the location it was...

Any other ideas?

Sounds like it might be time to trade up to a truck with a larger engine.

The 4.3 is great for around town and on the road by itself, but is really marginal for any heavy towing.

As far as the timing, it's all controlled by the computer as long as the base timing is set properly.

Base timing on a '94 needs someone with the knowledge to step in.

You can try adjusting the valves. There is a procedure in haynes manual. Don't overtighten, or you'll end up with less power than when you started. Only go 1/2 turn, not 3/4 like the book says. Mine has 300,000 and lacks 350 power, but still going good.

Could you hear the valves rattling a bit before you adjusted them? Mine doesn't seems to tick like it needs it.... but a good idea and free so I will try it

Check out this link ( I Googled this) for more info on timing procedures. Make sure to read all the posts fully. There is some good info in there. I might add that if you're not familiar with adjusting valves in sequence you should leave them alone. However, if you are familiar with the sequence then go for it.
