nitrous + turbo question
To anyone who knows anything about nitrous, ive got a couple questions. Please no dont give me the "you shouldnt me messing with that stuff if you dont know what your doing" kind of reply's cause i am just tryin to learn some stuff here.
so
If someone were to say that they're using a 42 shot of nitrous (forgive me if that number is ridiculous in any way im just throwin a number out there) what does that actually mean?
second, on a stock 305 with about 150,000 miles on it, what would be a "safe" shot to use in the engine
also i was wondering if i were to put a turbo on it, what would be the recomended boost on a stock engine? id like to add a few horses but im not willing to risk blowing an engine doing it. and i do not have any intention of having NOS and Turbo on it, im just kind of exploring my options here.

I don't know much about Nos but I would weigh the turbo out of your options... for the cost it wouldn't be worth it in your situation... my guess for safe boost on your car would maybe be like 4 psi?

the shot sizes are usually 50,75,100,125,150,175..etc. thats basically a jet size- a 50shot jet = roughly 50bhp increase..usually gonna be less than that..so if you have a 50shot, expect like 4o hp increase..
if its a stock 305 and you dont wanna blow the engine, i doubt you can have anything higher than a 75 shot...even then, if you dont tune it right, you still can blow it.. hitting the nos too early or letting the engine overrev or letting the mix run too lean will = dead engine..
as for turbo, if you dont wanna do internals, youre better off shooting nos since the gains will be so minimal..
just my 2cents from what i act like i know.. wait for philly to come around, hes used no2 before, everything i said is from my research + questions i asked on the forums

The rated shot of nitrous is the added increase at the crank. So, you won't see that number on the dyno at the rear wheels. On stock motor with that may miles, my guess is anything over a 75-100 shot will kill it after a few squeezes.
As far as the turbo, without a rebuild, the boost will shorten the life of the engine I would think. As said above, if you do go with boost, it will have to be a smaller number, like 3-4 psi. Even with that small of boost, the engine's days are numbered.
If you want power without risking the stress threshold of the motor, go with bolt-ons, and a heads/cam package, or just a cam. Those, tuned properly, can net more than a 75 hit of juice.

hmmmm 305? 150k?? i would say neither!! dont jack yourself up in the long run....if u want a real gain of 50-100 hp to the wheels off of a n2o setup i would say go to a 100-150 shot or higher, and u will see around that..but as its been stated it all to the crank as far is 100 for 100. i wouldnt think of more than a 50 shot on that car..and in my book its not even worth the money u would pay for the kit.u always look at hp by the dollar....700 bucks or more for 30-40hp is silly as hell, u would do better getting 2 fat chicks to ride with u down hill!! now as for the turbo..once again..if u dont wanna do internals then u wont be making any real power, so 3-5 grand for 6ohp maybe..is just silly. if u have money like that than pass me sum lol. to get real power from anything like that u need either a healthy engine, or a engine thats built for it..bottom line! this isnt a game of short cuts!! anything else will be a wast of your time, and hard earned money!!!

im thinking that i may wait until i have the money to drop a new engine into the car, or maybe wait til i can afford to have a car just to have fun with...thanks guys!

They are all right indeed. Any kind of nitrous or forced induction on that motor will surely put it in its grave very soon after. I'm willing to bet a fresh stock motor could run anywhere from 4-6 psi. But of course thats not the case here... If your gonna be running any nitrous or boost then its always recommended to build the motor to handle it first...
