screeching noise

i have a 93 toyota corolla. everytime i turn the steering wheel all the way left or right, it'll screech horribley. at times, when it's super cold and i start up the car, it'll screech too.

i checked the power steering fluid first, and it's full, so no problem there. i also noticed that when there is a screeching, my rpm raises by about 100-200. and my headlights dim for a second or so when i do turn the steering wheel. lots of info, but just wanna be a thorough as possible.

so wat could be the problem? i dont know if it's the timing belt, or if the water pump's bad, or maybe alternator pulley rusted up?

Re: screeching noise

Funny, for a while I had the same problem and i have a 91 corolla. I remember it being a screech and it always happened when i first started the car. The first turn or two i took were screeches. I changed something else that required all the belts coming off. I'm guessing the belt just needed tightening cause once I put everything back together I didn't hear it. Possibly just the belt? How old is the belt?

Re: screeching noise

look at the belt that drives the power steering pump. if it is frayed cracked or brittle replace it. if it looks good no cracks or frayes then tighten it up to where you can push it down a 1/2" . it is good idea to retention a new belt after 500 miles as most of them stretch a little after their run. but the noise you are describing is the powersteering belt
