1995 Grand prix questions
son bought a 95 last night with 131K miles on it and has a few things that we need to repair.
turn signals do not work, will just stay on and not blink/etc. any ideas?? fuse?
Temp gauge/engine seem to run hot, is that typical?

Re: 1995 Grand prix questions
Welcome to AF. A common problem on these cars regarding the turn signals is the multifunction switch in the steering column. The contacts fail and the turn signals cease to work. It can also affect the rear brake lights, as all power for the main rear lighting (high mount stop lamp has it's own circuit) runs through this m/f switch.

Re: 1995 Grand prix questions
Have you checked all the bulbs to make sure that the cause for the steady on turn signal condition isn't just because of a couple burnt out marker lights or something?
Also you say seems to run hot. What are you basing your opinion on? What is the exact temperature when its hot? Also would be good here to post the engine size since the 95 came with a few different engine options.

Re: 1995 Grand prix questions
It is a V6 - 3.1 engine size. I found that the 1 fan appears to work when the A/C is on but not sure if the other cooling fan ever kicks on? Also found that the plug going into the 2nd fan was not connected. Reconnected it and will have to wait and see. Temp Gauge runs between 230-250 which seems high?

Re: 1995 Grand prix questions
230-250 is too high. The first fan should kick in at around 215-220, and the second at 225-230 or when the A/C is turned on. Check the coolant level and the oil level. If coolant is low and oil is high, you may have a bad intake gasket causing an internal coolant leak, very common on the GM 3100, especially the late-95 and newer with the roller rocker arms.

Re: 1995 Grand prix questions
Thanks, will check it out. The fan on the passenger side (left side when facing front) is the fan that seems to work. The other one (driver side/right side when facing) I have never seen turn on. I thought I read that it should be the other way around? Can you clarify which fan should engage when the A/C is turned on? Right now it is the passenger side (left facing one).

Re: 1995 Grand prix questions
The fan on the drivers side is the primary fan, and should kick in first. If that fan isn't working, then that's why you're running hot.

Re: 1995 Grand prix questions
Ok, thanks. So do you think it is as simple as switching the 2 fan plugs??

No, if you switch the plugs, all it would do is reverse their operation. The passenger side fan would become the primary, and the drivers side would be the one kicking on (assuming it works). You posted earlier in this thread that the non-working fan was unplugged. Did you plug it back in or try testing it with jumper wires from the battery to insure it works?

No, I have not done that to test Fan #2. I will check it out. Thanks for the info.

Re: 1995 Grand prix questions
Also, come to find out this vehicle was in an accident of some sort and the radiator is bent/creased in the middle and the lower radiator support is missing. Could that be causing my issues? It doesn't leak any fluid but wonder if that is why the thermostat/fans are not operating as normal. Sorry stupid questions, not mechanically enclined.

Unless the wiring to the fans was damaged, I'd say no. The damaged radiator support could affect airflow through the radiator, and the bent radiator could be restricting coolant flow through it, either causing a possible issue with running hot, but it shouldn't affect the fan operation.
