Sunfire stuck in first gear

Hey,

I have an interesting problem. I took my car to a quicky oil change place earlier today and after they were finished, I drove off only to notice my car will not leave first gear. It will go through park, reverse, neutral, and first gear, but not any other forward gears. I also noticed that my speedometer is no longer working, and when I finally got my car to my apartment (after my 5 mph journey), there was some smoke from the engine bay. I tried arguing with the people at the shop and they were not willing to help or take any responsibility for this. My first thought was a connector must have been taken apart and not reconnected? I was also thinking maybe they drained the transmission fluid and did not refill it? Would that explain the speedometer issue though?

Has anyone experienced this before?

Thanks for the help,
-Jason

Make sure the VSS is connected at the transmission.
