Question 2001 Safari stalling at idle!

All,

I have a 2001 Safari with 160k miles. The van runs great down the road until I stop at a light or sign etc.. Then intermittenly the idle drops and stalls. No problem starting, but at that point I am left to drive two footed. The gages drop also (oil pressure, alternator, fuel). As time goes on, it seems to be more frequent. Any thoughts where to start?

Thanks in advance.

Re: 2001 Safari stalling at idle!

sounds like a clasiic EGR valve problem, but that would set a trouble code and turn on the check engine light during the problem. have you checked for stored trouble codes?

I am not getting a light, but I haven't checked for codes yet. Thanks I will update.

Re: 2001 Safari stalling at idle!

I had a similar problem with my 92 Safari. I changed the throttle position sensor with no change. Turned out to be the EGR had a piece of carbon causing the valve to not close. I cleared it with the air hose and when I went to get a new gasket I was asked if I wanted the $2 or the $10 one. I asked what the difference is. Turns out the $10 one has a screen to keep big particles out of the EGR. Still a year later starts better than my 2002 Safari.
