I have a 97 Yukon w/ auto trans.
Now I know a lot of this is WRONG to do but here goes.

I was driving through Kansas and the temp was 96 with a wind of 15- 25 mostly from the side. I was pulling a motorcycle in an enclosed trailer at about 80-85 with the cruise on and in overdrive and it was downshifting to 3rd on the rises, of course I was also blasting the air cond because of the temp. putting a little more strain on the engine. so one of the shifts felt bad and I pulled over to check it out. There was trans fluid all over. up pulls a local and says I shouldn't be in OD pulling a trailer especially with this wind. and that these things will blow fluid out the overflow when hot. OK I was pushing it a bit. so I limp it to the next exit and put in 1 1/2 Qt of fluid.

Then after letting it cool down I was on my way. ( headed back to PA ) only now in 3rd at about 65 mph. ( also the air worked much better in 3rd. ) I checked the fluid after about 50 miles and it was good. and about every 150 miles thereafter, still good.

First - I didn't know about this trans overflow, is this a common problem? It has never done this before.
Second - how much damage might I have done.
Third - any easy trans mods that I can do?

I just had the trans fluid and filter changed before this trip.

It has 192,000 miles on the original engine and trans. and does see occasional duty pulling a trailer.

Thanks for any advice you may have.

You pushed too hard towing this rig, most likely overheated the fluid and blew some out the vent or it was overfilled to some extent. An external additional cooler would help some, but 85 mph /96 degrees!!
