1990 Plymouth voyager.

Right rear turn signal and brake light worked intemittently. Bulb contacts were melted.
I was advised to replace the socket.

After replacement, the turn signal works during the day. At night when I turn the lights on, it does not. (Left side still works fine.) There is a taillight.

Wires on car were solid green, solid black, and something that was like dirty white, light beige, or a very faded pink.
The replacement socket had a solid black, a green with a white stripe and a red with a white stripe. I matched car green to socket green with white stripe, black to black, and the car indescribable color to socket red with white stripe.

What did I do wrong?

On the van side:
Dark Green = Turn signal switch input
Black = Headlamp switch input
Grey = Chassis ground

Since it appears they don't match what you're seeing you can use a multimeter to determine which is which. The wire with constant continuity is the ground. Turn the ignition switch on and activate the turn signal. Whichever wire you get 12vdc on is the input from the turn signal switch. Turn it off and turn on the headlights. Whichever wire you get 12vdc on is the input from the headlamp switch.

On the new socket side:
You'll have to correlate the wire color to the socket contact and to the filaments. The common connection/contact to each filament will be the ground.

You could always compare the left side to the right paying close attention to which wire goes to which contact in the socket.

My ability to get to the site has been limited for some time, sorry about not getting a more timely post with resolution.

I am embarrased to say that my electrical and electrical tool skill is pretty minimal and because of that I did not think carefully about your post. Had I done so, the piece of information about the grey wire was exactly what I needed to know to fix the problem.

What finally happened was after I bought a second socket, a sympathetic parts man at the auto supply store I went to got interested in my problem and took the time to do some tests on the socket and tell me how I probably needed to hook things up and the key was that grey wire being the ground.

After I finally got back to it and got it fixed, it works fine. I appreciate the time you took to give me some help.

I just ran out of time, I have a Cavalier electrical problem too, posts in that forum get me down to testing issues. If I can get back here with some specific questions, could you talk to me about how to use testing tools?
