Acura Transmission Miles to Engine Miles..Need Help..!

Hey guys I'm new to this forum and stuff and not a big car guy...My brother has a 2001 Acura CL 3.2...He bought the car maybe a year ago....He had to replace the transmission on it and the transmission has maybe 70,000 to 90,000 miles on...The dashboard says 189,000 miles on it...Hows does the transmission relate to the engine miles..?...Is it good that the transmission has less miles on it..I'm not a car enthusiast or anything..So any info would be helpful...I might buy it for $3,000 but I helped my brother out with something and he owes me about $5,000...He has done things to it like struts and all that...I drive it alot and it runs good but I just wanted to know about that stuff that I stated up above..

I don't think I fully understand your question? The odometer reads 189,000 and he's replacing the current transmission with one that came out of a car with only 70 - 90k? Or is it that he swapped out his tranny at about 110k and you're wondering how much life is left in the current one? Either way, the miles on the transmission aren't measured by the odometer at all, just the miles put on the car itself, regardless of how many transmissions you go through.

Welcome to AF

It was already replaced..And I think it only had 70-90k when it was put into the car...Yeah basically I wanted to know how much life and if it is a good deal..I would only be spending 3gs cash for it...Thank for the info...

Well assuming he only put another 10-15k miles on the tranny since he's had it and the car is otherwise in good shape then $3000 is a good deal. Honda transmissions are pretty durable so if that trans hasn't been abused and everything is cared for it could very well run for another 60-75K miles probably more.

is it true-1999 TL has an extended warranty because of the defective tranny? i heard it is only good for about 40,000 miles.

Re: Acura Transmission Miles to Engine Miles..Need Help..!

If Honda found the tranny to be defective in the 99 TL they would have issued a recall instead of declaring an extended warranty for that model year. It costs them less to do all the replacements at one time rather than have them spread out in a less-predictable pattern. So to answer your question, no it is probably not true. There may be trans issues with the 99 TL but I doubt Honda would issue an extended warranty as a means of dealing with it.
