rebuilding sbc heads

I have a 350 im getting ready to put in my camaro. i have new valve springs and retainers with valve stem seals. I thought i knew how to do this but i dont want to do it wrong and then start it up and end up wearing it! now when trying to change the seals the old ones have a different style from intake to exhaust valves but the new seals i got are the same for both and they arent as rigid as the old ones, the old ones had a metal ring around it , it looks like. the new seal are just rubber and not rigid at all. also what keeps the seal from walking up the valve while its running? and last question. there is a cup that goes over the retainer and about 1/2 inch down the spring. the kit i ordered from crane cams came with springs and retainers but the "cups" from the old valve springs will not fit over these new retainers.. is this a problem?
any help will be appreciated
thanks
john
