puzzled 95 grand am gets to 4000 rpm then goes down to 3000

hi guys i have a real puzzler and was wondering if anyone had this symptom. i have a 3.1 v6 grand am 95 and as i said in the title this car has lost power. if you put it in park and run it to 4000 rpm it automatically goes down to 3000 i have never seen a car do this im puzzled. thanks in advance for any help. all it said in the codes were missfire of 4 cylinder. thanks

I would look into the misfire that came back in the code! more then likely the computer dropped your rpms the prevent any engine damage due to the misfire.

wel i guess ill try to bump this up. i want to check the plugs and wires for fire again but they are the back ones that are hard to get to. any tricks on how to get to the back 3 plugs and wires. i tried to get my hand down there and man thats a small space to deal with. thanks for the help by the way
