Red face 98 GTP - Tranny shift range problem

I fired up my GTP for the first time today. After turning over the car a few times working out a few installation bugs, I ran into a transmission problem.
WIth the enigne running, my tranny will not shift into Park or 1st. Transmission shifts fine when in R, D, 3, & 2. I can turn off the car, pull the key out while the shifter is in the Park position even though it's in R and the indicator indicates the correct gear. Using the shift lock release, the gear selector goes to the D position for Neutral before I can start the car.
Any info as to how I can tackle this problem?

Re: 98 GTP - Tranny shift range problem

I guess i've never done a swap of either a motor or tranny in a GP, but im pretty sure that the linkage between the shifter and he tranny is adjustable, You have to unhook the linkage, manually click the trans in park, put the gearshift in park, and then bolt it back together. Then make sure with the PN switch that the car will start in park and in neutral. If it doesnt you have to play with it untill it does.

Funny story about the only time I swapped a tranny in a 3.8 V6......

When i was in school, in my tranny class (tech college grad for auto mechanics), The teacher had me and a buddy of mine do a tranny swap on a 1988 buick lesabre. 3.8 4t60. It was a junkyard tranny that he had for it. Without question Andy and I started removal of the tranny. Once out we set them both side by side and thats when we noticed that the junkyard tranny had a different electrical connector than the one that came out. Teach said to braek them open and swap harnesses. Called and got another tranny coming for the junkyard. A week later it showed up. This time it all was the same except for the fact that the retarded ass junkyard guys broke off the gear selecter stud on the tranny. So we wasted no time, each took a tranny and cracked them open to swap the studs out. Once they were back together, we put the jy tranny in the car. Everything together, car running, tranny fluid in, no leaks, shifts in the bay beautifully. Took it out to adjust throttle pressure cable, noticed that it was broke. DAMNIT, two days later had a new one. Got it adjusted to shift just perfect at light throttle. At hard trottle, it slipps BAD in 2nd gear. Being the LAST day of the class and of school, there was nothing that we could do. Teacher gave us a good grade for it anywyas. Moral of the story, dont buy junkyard trannys without a guarentee. The teacher said the Andy and i would never have had enough time to rebuild the origonal on, but with all the trouble we went through, we should have done just that. Oh well. live and learn.
