ABS light on, TRAC off.

I have a problem that most likely is a coincedence but started after my last oil change. When ever I am slowing over a speed bump or slowing and turning to the right, My car makes kind of a grunting growling noise from the front. Then it feels like the brake pedal will move in and out. kind of like there is pressure and then no pressure. I guess another way to say it would be it feels like the ABS is doing its job but so I can feel it. But then sometimes after this happens the ABS light will turn on and the TRAC off light will turn on and stay on until I turn the car off. They are not displayed when the car is restarted. Wanted to know if spilling oil on the sensor or any modules will cause this problem. Haven't checked codes yet. Just wanted to see if anyone had an idea here first. Thanks

Re: ABS light on, TRAC off.

I would say it's a coincidence, and the oil change had nothing to do with it. Your symptoms indicate a failing hub bearing. The growling is the bearing itself, and the trac-off/ ABS lights are the wheel speed sensor contained in the hub.

Re: ABS light on, TRAC off.

Thanks for the info. I had thought about the bearing. I may have misspoke. it is not so much a growling noise as kind of noise a pump might make when going bad. Plus the ABS I talked about, it actually feels like and over exaggerated pumping of the brake pedal. I am going to check for play in the bearings now to see if I can find anything. Thank you.

Re: ABS light on, TRAC off.

When hubs first start to fail, and/or the wheel speed sensor is going out, the ABS computer gets a bad signal and will activate the ABS pump. It interprets the bad sensor's signal as wheel lock-up, and electronically pumps the brakes (the feeling you're getting in the pedal). Over time, the sensor will short completely and the ABS light will stay on, disabling the ABS system.

Re: ABS light on, TRAC off.

Make sure that the connections are connected and in there proper place just not hanging there. I had the abs kicking on on my car when brakes were applied. Took the wheels off and one of the connections was just hanging there. I put the connection back in the right spot and been driving for 2 weeks with out an issue.

Re: ABS light on, TRAC off.

Sorry it took so long to reply. Thanks. I decide(since I am trying to sell this one) to use an air hose and blow out the back side of the bearing. It worked. I don't have the problem any more. Maybe just dirt in there?

Thanks for the belated feedback. This thread has been closed since the issue is resolved and due to the age of the thread.
