Entrusive or Not Entrusive that is the quest.

Hello all,
I am new to the forum and I did a search and couldn't come up with anything so here goes. I have a 1998 Chevy venture 3.4l engine. Here is the issue. My Dad and I were doing a head gasket job because we had white misty smoke coming from the tail pipe. When putting back together the head I mistakenly put the exhaust push rod from cyl. 5 in the intake for cyl. 1(Didn't know this before I performed the following). As some of you know they are longer on the exhaust side than the intake side. We put everything back on and tried to start it and nothing. It sounded out of time so I checked the timing chain and it was really loose so it probably would have broken soon so I did the timing chain and gears. Everything back together and nothing. Changed out the Camshaft sensor and it started but rough and it clanked and we turned it off. Went back to the rockers and found exhaust for 5 was real loose but not because the bolt wasn't tight. Took all the rockers off and found the intake for cyl 1 had the exhaust push rod in it. That push rod is bent. Viewing what happend, Does anyone know if I now would need a valve job. A mechanic friend of mine down the street said he doesn't know what the clearance for the valves are so he doesn't know what to say. My Dad is going to do a compression test on it tonight but it would be nice to say yes or no on this before he gets here.
Thank you for your help.
Andrew

Welcome to AF. Nothing to loose here, get the right pushrod in there, fingers crossed and do a compression test, if no good the valve is bent, it comes apart, valve gets replaced, piston gets looked at and back together, std procedure with this.

Thank you, I figured that was the only way to tell without taking the heads back off.
:)
