Octane Magazine Issue 50+51 - Mclaren!

Now I have just taken delivery of Issue 50 - August edition, the one with the Aston Martin DB4GT on the front as well as Steve McQueen's Ferrari 250GT Lusso. On page 8 it states what is due in next month's issue (out on July 25th) - why do they tease us like that when we haven't even got past the adverts to see what is inside this issue? - and lo and behold it states there will be a write up on the Mclaren F1 in issue 51. Wonder whose they'll use - Nick Masons #10R seeing as he writes a column in the mag, or Jay Leno's as he does a page too? Or another one, perhaps #06R, chassis #069 (please please), Juan Barazi's or Rowan Atkinsons or another, I don't really care, as long as it has a great story and decent pics.

Elsewhere in Issue 50, there is a section where Octane poses 3 questions to 50 'players' in the classic car world - What was your first car; What is the fastest car you have driven or been driven in; and finally what is your favourite car.....I have only listed the ones with a Mclaren F1 reference

Jay Leno - in answer to Q3 :- "I really dont have an all time favourite car. I could narrow it down to 2: the Mclaren F1 and the 1925 Doble Steam Car". He does state for Q2 that the fastest car he has ever been driven in was "a jet car on a dry lake bed - 278mph. The fastest I have driven is at 207mph in the Mclaren Mercedes SLR at the Idiada track near Barcelona". not the F1 then

Gordon Murray - in answer to Q2 :- "Mclaren F1 at 220 mph - with me driving - in Germany". Balls of Steel!!

Doug Nye - in answer to Q2 :- "Fastest road car was the Mclaren F1 which I drove on the road and at Millbrook during the 9 years I was retained as a consultant/tame author to Mclaren Cars. Something like 145-150mph - it might have been on the public road but i'll take the fifth..." . See my comment re Gordon Murray

Karl Friedrich Schuefele (Head of Mille Miglia sponsor Chopard) in answer to Q2 :- I believe it was in the Mclaren F1 around Silverstone close to top speed

Chris Willows (Director of Corporate Communications at BMW (UK) Ltd - in answer to Q2 :- "I was driven in a Mclaren F1 at just over 200mph at Bruntingthorpe by Mike Franey. The very generous owner of the car had earlier met me at Reading services for an early Sunday morning drive. To my amazement, after a short stop for breakfast he handed me the keys." Lucky SOB.

So, I will scan in issue 51 once I get it delivered on / around the 25th July.......Watch this space

Doug Nye managed 145-150mph? I have been a good 40mph faster on a motorcycle! Surely he can't think that's impressive in supercar circles?

4 F1's, and new owner info too!!

One of the best quotes - "I still like the story of one japanese client who called in to discuss the details of his cars. Gordon proudly displayed the compartment suitable for taking a set of golf clubs. The customer intimated he had two clubs; Gordon patiently explained there was enough room for a full set. No, no, the client explained - I have 2 Golf Clubs - with substantial memberships."

Front Cover

Some other F1 related info in the issue

And then the article in page order left to right

Re: Octane Magazine Issue 50+51 - Mclaren!

Thanks to the article, we now know Aaron Hsu owns #069 and #12R and the article provides confirmation of a Glasel owning #21R, though not Petler as per here but Christian

The article is a great read, with Dean Lanzante, Nick Mason, Gordon Murray, Mark Hales and Brian laban all contributing to the piece, and there are some great shots too

Well worth the money paid for it

Thanks

Also proves 012R is poking around England and hasn't changed and isn't the car here in the US in Connecticut

Did Hsu own 21R, which recently was sold because of bankruptcy?

That's what I was told here, although as Octane state Hsu owns #069 - the ex-James Munroe car - my contact may have gotten it twisted. We all know James Munroe was a crook working in the Finance Sector and my contact may have got the cars and story back to front; not Hsu's #21R being sold due to Bankruptcy but Hsu buying #069 with the history of James Munroe..... not beyond the realms of possibility
