retrofit gas cap with fuel guage?

Hi, we have a Chevy fullsize truck (I forget what kind)... pickup truck and the gas guage quit working. I'm borrowing it from my dad and I'm always scared I'm going to run out of gas. He doesn't want to spend the time pulling the gas tank to fix it. I was wondering if there were retrofit gas caps that would have a guage on that which would tell you how much gas you have. Maybe it would have a string with a float on it that would just hang into the tank and tell how much gas is in the tank. Any one ever figured out a way to do something similar?

Given the curves in the fill hoses, I don't think that could be done. If the odometer works, just figure the MPG, find the tank size, and for figuring Miles per tank, go down 1-2 MPG so there's an allowance for increased fuel consumption.

So I go to this get-together at a friends house, not remembering it's a few days before Halloween. I see a bunch of dirty looking strangers. Then I see a guy that was clearly wearing a Halloween costume and I make the connection, and say "Oh yeah, Halloween... y'all goin' as a group of bums?". Turns out they weren't wearing costumes.
