Question 97' Geo Metro Crank Gear worn out

my 97'Geo metro 3-cylinder has been laggy these last few days and left me stopped on the side of the road. After getting it started back up I have to hope I can get it back home. If been told the Crank gear is worn out and have been quoted $525. My mechanic said it is that or get a whole new engine. I in a tough spot I really need that car fixed. Should I pay him that kinda money or is there another alternative?

Re: 97' Geo Metro Crank Gear worn out

The only problem I've had with the crank pulley is when two of my metros broke the bolt that holds the timing pulley to the crankshaft. Now, that's what I got for using an impact socket to install that bolt in the first place, instead of torquing it properly with a torque wrench. If this is the case with your car, the crankshaft will need to be replaced because, as a result, the key way which aligns the gear with the crank will be destroyed. So - assuming the crank has to be replaced, I'd say the price is decent. Do you have anymore details?

Re: 97' Geo Metro Crank Gear worn out

One thing I have noticed on a couple Geos is that the notch in the crank gear for the key will get deformed and messed up, and even the notch on the crank too. He probably suggested a new engine in case the crank is messed up from it. Get in there though, have him show you the crank gear, the key-weigh and the notch on the crank for the key-weigh to make sure he isn't gona charge you for a new engine if it's just the crank gear.

Can someone explain to me how to post a problem about my car??? I hate computers

Re: 97' Geo Metro Crank Gear worn out

thanks guys
you were right the automotive place I took my car to did suggest that I get a new engine put into my car to get a complete fix. They said the temprary welding fix would be the price they quoted me. I went ahead and had them do some welding to give me a temp. fix. The car is running okay. However I don't believe investing the kind of money into the car it would take to get a new engine into the car would be worth it. So now I am trying to think of a good reliable car with good gas milage on it to invest into. Some kind of coupe style.

Buy a new crank gear. drill 2 holes at 90 degress to crankishaft in it. Thread for allen screws and put on crankshaft. This worked for me. I spent $35 and got it running again. 2 days work.

That is absolutely brilliant!! +5 for ingenuity! Thanks for your input. I will be doing this if it ever happens again.
