Angry okokok... Steering-damned-Wheel

How do you the friggin steering wheel off on a 70?

The only thing I can find is the big but holding the wheel onto the column, no snap ring or anything. What am I missing?

If I can't get the fucker off there normally the next time I try it, I'm cutting it the fuck off there. This is friggin ridiculous. I already broke a puller trying to get it off, snapped in in half. The damned thing won't budge.

Big bolt?

Never seen a big bolt, just the 3 standard smaller guys around the center of the shaft put the puller bolts in those and away we go.

You know I was going to try some quick thinking, you sent me a pic of your damned dash a while back, and the stupid horn cover is on the wheel.

Steering Wheel

Column

(edit) Someone from another board had mentioned a spring on the bottom of the wheel (firewall side) that hold the whell against a snap ring that I may not be seeing, but the wheel is fixed in place... if there's a spring or snap ring I must be looking in the wrong place.

Re: okokok... Steering-damned-Wheel

And you can see the splines on the sides correct?

You should be able to jsut put a puller on it and get er loose. Might require some "persuassion" with a mallet from behind given it's probably been there for years.

Re: okokok... Steering-damned-Wheel

Yeah, I can see the splines... tried hitting the column with a hammer while pulling, broke a puller.... maybe a gear puller might have a little more balls behind it? There's no hydraulic press that'll work on that is there... maybe I can rent one?

I want to replace it anyway, so I'm not against destroying it, (I'd rather sell it than trash it though), but I don't want to damage the column.

sawzall off as much as you can and duct tape the new wheel to what remains

How in the hell did you break a puller, or was it one of those $10 ones?

Re: okokok... Steering-damned-Wheel

Use a harmonic balancer puller. It's going to be stronger than a jaw-type puller, and you can bolt the damn thing to the wheel.

Fire some PB in the splines, butter em up, along with give a nice whack to to the shaft bolt to shock it.

Please tell me that PB does NOT mean Peanut Butter... or is this another thread headed for the depths of depravity?
