Venture Transmission

While driving on a long trip, our Venture stalled. The engine was running but the car would not ove either forward or back. There were no prior indication. The car repair shop tells me that the transmission needs to be replaced. My question is can the transmission go bad all of sudden?

The replacement cost of the trasnmission is $3000, which is the same as the trade in value of the car. Is there a cheaper way of getting the transmission replaced.

Thanks

Re: Venture Transmission

NO, NO, NO. Don't give in to the "replace the transmission" monkey, er, I mean mechanic. I gave in to this awhile back on another car I had and I have been kicking myself the a@@ ever since. Just like a doctor that says you have cancer, get a second opinion. Call the dealer and talk to the service guys or another service shop in your area.

It should be less money to simply have the transmission re-built.

You didn't give a year or a mileage for the venture.

Did you at least check and see if there is fluid in the transmission? If yes is the fluid red or black? If it is black does it smell burnt? If yes then it is possible that it failed suddenly however, it is more likely that you would have noticed the transmission slipping first. Did the "mechanic" say what was wrong with the tranny? Torque converters can go rather suddenly.

$3K sounds high, last trans I had replaced was in a Ford Windstar about $1800 for a rebuilt at the dealership about 5-6 years ago. I would call around for a second opinion and a second, third, forth estimate. Most reputable garages will give you a ball park figure over the phone, but won't put it in writing until they can look at the trans. Only work with places that will give you a written warranty preferably nationwide since your away from home.

Good luck,

Sparky
