2000 Silverado - Brake Life

Hey guys. I have a 2000 Silverado 2WD with the 5.3L V8 and towing package. Those of you with similar vehicles - how long have you gotten out of a set of front brakes? I have 116000 miles on my truck and just changed the front pads for the first time last week. The pads looked fine, and probably had 1/8-3/16 of an inch before the squealers hit the rotors. I only changed them because I figured 116000 miles and 7 years was long enough on one set of pads, and by the time I got a chance to check them again I figured I'd have had to put rotors on too.

Has anyone else gotten this long out of a set of pads? I bought the truck new so I know this was the first time the pads had been changed, although I had been checking them from time to time.

The driver's foot is usually makes the difference in long or short life pads.

The OEM ceramic pads have good life. I just changed mine out at 63000 miles for the first time. They looked fine, but I changed em anyway. Pads can glaze over and actually wear on the rotor versus wearing down the pad.

I thought it was strange that my pads looked good after 60,000 miles too.

Re: 2000 Silverado - Brake Life

My experience has been that the pads outlive the rotors. I just replaced front and rear rotors and pads on my wife's 2003 1/2 ton yukon at 50,000 miles. The braking surfaces were 50% gone, due to rust. The pads still had 1/4" left. My 2005 silverado hd with 48,000 miles has the same problem with the rear rotors. The brakes work okay, though braking capacity has to be less, but they won't pass PA state inspection.
