Importing Skylines Into Canada???

:flipa: MOTOREX:flipa: THEY OVERCHARGE FOR THE CAR :flipa:

Anyways, I am a Canadian that is looking to import a 94-96 Skyline GTS-T into Canada in 2005. My main problem so far is getting a straight answer from Transport Canada and the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV). Both of them repeatedly quote the statutes about a vehicle that is under 15yrs old that was not originally made according North American (NA)Safety standards, is not permissible in Canada. This clause is totally ambiguous and vague!

However, I am currently bickering over this w/ Transport Canada and the RIV considering there seems to be a Grey area involved in that. It seems that the statute has neglected the proposition that it may be possible for a car to built outside NA, which will still cohere w/ NA standards. This means that just b/c the Skyline was built outside NA, it does not necessarily mean that it was not built to surcome to our safety standards. It just means that that it was built outside NA according to safety standards which might even exceed ours. Therefore, it is wrong for Transport Canada and the RIV to assume that the clause is sound.

Sorry for all of the LOGIC (I am Philosophy Honours Student), I just really want a Skyline. I've actually wanted one since the first time I played GT1 (which was the first day it came out in my city).

If anybody has any info that would help me...PLS POST...I need all of the help that I can get if I can get my 94-96 GTS-T!

Yes there is a Grey area in regards to the laws but you will not get any information in regards to it because it is just more paperwork for them.
I have imported a Rx-7 from Japan for myself and I now know all the hoops involved in it. Soon I will be able to import R32 Skyline gtrs for around 15-20k american. I dunno if you would be interested but just a thought. If you wanted r33s or r34s it would obviously be more expensive. =P

Unfortunately you could try arguing your point in court but if you lose they will force you to
a: Crush your vehicle and bill you for it.
b: Force you to export your vehicle.
c: Force you to hold your car in bonded storage till it is 15 years old.. (bonded storage can be around 8 dollars a day at some places)

Just make sure you get all the kinks ironed out before you import it..
It can be tricky. Originally my car did not have the vehicle info on the door... I was like.. "ummm yeah..... this car is not stolen... so please do not arrest me." :D

In order to get a skyline into Canada, it has to be 15 years or older when coming across the border. I know this because I am looking to import an R32 GTR and I was told by the department of transport that it has to be over that to be exempt from all the garbage they have to work out. So only cars that are 15 years or older, unless you have a letter from the company of the manufacture that states the car is compliant of the roadways in another country, which is pretty much impossible

I'm glad you know so much about Motorex, and how much they should charge for their cars. Maybe they should hire you as a consultant.

If you want a car, make sure it isn't because of a cartoon or a video game. That's got to be the lamest reason out there.

This means that just b/c the Skyline was built outside NA, it does not necessarily mean that it was not built to surcome to our safety standards. It just means that that it was built outside NA according to safety standards which might even exceed ours.

The Skyline probably does not totally conform to North American safety standards, since it has to be modified by Motorex.

Yeah it is supposed to be 15 years old in order to be imported into Canada... this is not completely true though.. I imported my rx-7 to Vancouver.... and from vancouver shipped it.... unbonded (whoops) to Calgary... when I learned that the dealers estimate of age was off... so I had to put it in bonded storage for 4 monthes.. So the moral of the story... get a letter from the car manufacturer stating the age of the vehicle.. unless you wanna try your luck hehe. :D

The only way of getting around it could basically be taking the law to court... you might get a exemption but you would have to have a good reason for it... However vechicles for race purposes and show purposes do not neccessarily need to conform to the laws... Which is nice. If you want a r-34 gtr you better start looking into importing it as a race car. However if you do... you can never drive it on public roads... wheeee :D

i don't understand the law in canada....
is there any way to import a GTR into Canada?
is that even if i have bought a GTR and have shipped to the port of Canada, they will not allow me to take the car home rite? and i will not be able to buy insurance for it rite?
what if i ship the car to US and buy insurance from the states and drive it back to Canada with US plate?

They will most likely shoot you haha. :D

Nope they will not let you take it home... basically.. you are not allowed to touch it till it clears customs.. haha sucks huh. =)
I had a car I could not touch for 5 monthes.. talk about going crazy hehe.

Sure you can import a skyline gtr... if it is not 15 years old tho they will probably destroy it..

There is a long list of little peice of paper you need.... insuring it is the very last peice of paper you will get... ya gotta get the papers saying it is all good and can be insured from customs first. =)

You cannot bring a no originally complying vehicle from the u.s. into Canada... so the U.S. idea might not work out..

Ahhhhhhhh the wonderful world of importation laws... =P

is that mean when you import a car, you will need that long list of paper work or the custom will prepare it for you?
A no originally complying vehicles are the ones that are not even producing in North American rite?

shadow101:
What car was that you imported? How come you have to wait for 5 months?

a rx-7 produced in 1988.. the dealer said it was made in 87 but it wasn't.. so a had ti find bonded storage within 30 days or they would have exported it or crushed it. It turns to the magical age of 15 on may 19th. =)

Customs prepares you for nothing.. They really do not feel like teaching everyone about the laws.. you will get little help from them. Transport Canada.. same deal.. you will get a little information but not a lot.

Also vehicles can be made outside of north america and comply to north american standards.. but it would have to be specifically made to comply to those standards.

Feel free to ask any questions.. I know a bit about the whole deal.. but I am by no means a expert. =P

ppl always say legalizing. Does that mean to make the vehicle comply to the N.A. standard?
Does that mean if i buy a GTR from outside Canada and already have it comply to the N.A. standard, then can i bring the car in?
i know Motorex charges about $30k to legalize your own GTR but do you know what has to be done to comply the standard? like a safety test, crush test.....etc?
How come US can legalize a GTR and drive it on the street but Canada can't do the same thing as Motorex does?
I know there's a guy in my town driving a Evo8 that he bought from the states w/ US plate but he's still driving in town. Does the Evo8 comply to the N.A. standard?
Have you ever heard those GTR in United Arab Emirates? How do i know that one is not stolen if i have the VIN? Can i contact Nissan in Japan and ask them about this VIN?

Thanks a lot.........i know it's a long long question....:p

You could bring in a car into the U.S. get U.S. plates... insure it in the U.S. and drive it in Canada. Unofortunately you will lose a lot of the benifits because you will still be forced to legalise it for america and doing that is by no means cheap.. However if you do that you cannot register it in Canada till it is 15 years old because as the law states you cannot import a vehicle not originally meeting the North american safety standards. The only exeption to this is the 15 year rule or if you take the law to court and are granted a exemption.

The reason Motorex can import a car into America is because they are allowed to modify the vehicle to meet safety standards. This is not the case in Canada though.. that is basically illegal. However you can import vehicles for racing purposes that will not necessarily meet our standards... but then you will never be able to drive it on public roads.

I am not sure what the person who owns the evo 8 did.

In regards to seeing if it is stolen you can basically order a car information in regards to the vin from Japan. Sometimes I think my car is stolen even though the paper work matches up because the plates on the doors are missing.. I only have the one on the engine bay.. =P
You will probably get a certificate of cancellation of motor vehicle registration... if you did not get that you might have problems. =P

If the paperwork matches up and you have all the documents and are breaking no laws.. then you should be good to go..
After you import it you basically pay customs 14% of what you originally paid for the car.. which is annoying as hell. :p
