1992 Airconditioning Is Not Working

This is the first time I've had a problem with the AC. What steps should be taken to track down the problem ?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

1. Fuses

2. Belts

Temperature should be set to cold!

Re: 1992 Airconditioning Is Not Working

Somick, thanks for your reply. The fuse is fine and the belt is tight. The setting is on cold. We still do not have AC . Is there a way to check the charge in the system without going to a service centre ?

Thanks.

Should see bubbles in the sight glass (if there is one) on top of the drier/filter. Hissing is another sign. You can buy a a set of gauges to check the pressures but, if you've had zero experience working on A/C systems I would recommend you head for a shop and let them check it. This system can kill you.

Is the compressor turning on at all? Is it cycling on and off really fast?

Smile Re: 1992 Airconditioning Is Not Working

To keep everyone posted that replied to my problem and others who may be watching I took my car to my local mechanic in our village and he found the airconditioning coolant charge was at about 1/4 of what it should be.

The problem is, the type of coolant used in the V6 - 1992 to 1994 camry is no longer used or available. To use the coolant now used, it would cost $800 - $1000 to change out the components of the system.

He had a lower cost solution !

He put a vacuum on the sytem for over an hour and the vacuum did not change. He then charged the system with 3 - 6 oz. (170g) of HC-12a manufacured by Northcutt Inc., Wichita KS.
Each can is equivalent to 15 oz. (425 g) of HFC R134a and 17 oz. (480g) CFC R12. On the can it states" Patented Natural Refrigerant, Non Global Warming, Non ozone depleting, Contains No CFC'S, HFC'S or HCFC'S, Anti-Friction Additive."
He also added a green dye. The dye is to be able to use a light to trace minute leaks should the coolant start to be lost at anytime in the future. He could not provide a guarantee, but felt it would last at least 3 years.

The total cost was $60 for the 3 cans. $10 for the dye and $50 for labour for a total of $120 plus Ontario PST and GST which came to a final cost of a little over $138.00 CDN. Not much difference in U.S. equivalency these days.

The cooling is back and is really needed since we are experiencing temperatures in the high 20's and low 30's C ( 85 - 93 F) with high humidity in Ontario.

One problem he did find.

When the car is idling, the fan speed does not rotate at the proper speed to effectively provide the cooling you would and should expect. Accelerate just a small amount and the cooling returns instantly. The V6 1992 - 1994 have a hydraulic motor turning the fan, not electric as is mainly standard.

Can anybody offer a suggestion and a fix for this problem ?

I hope so far this is of assistance to anyone experiencing a similar problem.

Thanks for all your input.
