1991 Lumina 3.1 No spark...
This is My fiancee's car, and she came home from work one night fine, woke up the next morning and nothing... It is getting no spark, but turning over great. the following have been done:
Fuel Pressure checks out
ICM Replaced (new)
all 3 Coil Packs replaced (new)
ECM replaced (Used)
Still no spark. I see comments about Crank position sensor and timing chain... Are these tough to do if that is our issue? I am only a little competent in auto repair, and am pretty broke so we cannot take it in somewhere. Any ideas would be WONDERFUL!

Welcome to AF. If you scan the car look at cranking rpms, if none suspect wiring from the crank sensor to the icm or the cps is bad, rear of block, r/s at crank centerline.

Re: 1991 Lumina 3.1 No spark...
Now, rear of block is actually on the drivers' side of the car looking from the hood back, correct?
Thanks for the welcome!

Re: 1991 Lumina 3.1 No spark...
All descriptions of car components assume from the drivers seat, so the R/s is pass. side. Do not just replace this sensor without confirming it is bad, I have seen them stick in the block from carbon build up and break off!!

Re: 1991 Lumina 3.1 No spark...
Did you take the e-prom from your original ECM and transfer it to the used one you bought? The ECM can be used in many different cars, it's the e-prom that is calibrated to your car. If you did swap them (and assuming the used ECM was good), it's either the crank positon sensor or the wiring between it and the ICM. The CKPS can be simple or very difficult. If the oil seal o-ring sticks in the block, it can be very difficult to get out. If not, it's a 10 minute job.

Re: 1991 Lumina 3.1 No spark...
we tried both ways, old PROM and New PROM, going to go and exchange out the ECM today after work to see if it could be bad.
I saw that it is as simple as a single bolt on the sensor, but if it back along the firewall, it would be a pain to get to, no?

Re: 1991 Lumina 3.1 No spark...
It's not that hard to get to, but if it's stuck and the top breaks off, you're in trouble. Before changing the sensor, visually inspect the CKPS harness and use a digital ohm meter to check for continuity between the CKPS and the ICM. The harness that goes between the two is routed under the front of the engine and may be cut/worn through. It runs really close to the harmonic balancer and the right cv axle shaft.

Re: 1991 Lumina 3.1 No spark...
Cool, will give that a go, have to find my meter... According to the component locator section of the autozone website the CKPS is: Under hood, passenger side, lower engine area, passenger side of engine block, mounted front of crankshaft pulley... Would giving the sensor a good zap with the cure-all wonder spray(WD-40) make it any easier to pull if we have to?

Re: 1991 Lumina 3.1 No spark...
yes, unbolt it, twist it side to side, sray inside with penetrant, twist more, spray more, gently pull out while twisting. Kepp doing this very carerfully. If it breaks off. there is nothing you can do short of tap it IN and remove the subframe to get the oil pan off, and fish it out that way.

Re: 1991 Lumina 3.1 No spark...
gives an extremely basic run down, but nothing about accessing it. If I rotate the engine, will that rotat JUST the engine, or does the transaxle rotate too?
