ABS - 1992 Lumina - Please Help!

I've been having trouble with my 1992 Lumina. The ABS is engaging, though I'm driving on dry roads. It seems to happen most when I turn the wheel, and when I am driving slowly, so my suspicion is that it has something to do with a faulty turn sensor. The car is in otherwise great shape, and only has about 63,000 miles.

My question is this: would it be safe to simply remove the ABS fuse for the next few days, as I'll be out of town, and my wife is taking the car on a 3-hour round trip drive? I'm going to try it out, and test drive around the neighborhood, but I am concerned that it might confuse the brake system in general if I remove the fuse.

Does anyone have experience with this, or can offer advice? And help is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to AF. You can remove th fuse, this just disables the abs no effect on regular braking. A scan with an abs function scanner is the best way to check wheel speed sensor inputs. There is no " turn" sensor.

Thank you! I removed the fuse, took a test drive, and all is well.

Re: ABS - 1992 Lumina - Please Help!

This same problem keeps cropping up more and more...but nobody ever posts what the resolution was for it...since it seems to be common, I wish we had some idea what happens.

It seems like the ABS module is not allowing for the slight differential in wheel speeds when the wheels are turned, and reacts with unwanted ABS activation or something...or else a wheel speed sensor is sending an incorrect signal that indicates that wheel is rolling slower than it is...I don't know how that happens...maybe if a tooth is missing off the sensor ring?

Dude! Me too! Not cool...

Ok, I've had my trusty lil '94 chevy lumina euro for a year now, and the thing's been pretty good for me (I've only replaced the rear struts and a section of corroded coolant line) but now I'm also getting this @#&%$ "antilock brakes" light and it's actin' just like ya'll said- the whole randomly engaging the ABS on dry roads. The only variable I notice is it usually happens when I go over a pothole, speed bump, etc.
The brake pedal depresses a little, then grind whir clunk, then after 5 seconds depresses fully and normally. What the ? Loose wire? If so, where?

To properly diagnose these conditions in an abs system ( nobody wants to or does this) it should be scanned during a road test with an abs function scanner, looking at wheel speed sensor inputs at this time will pinpoint the suspect component.
