Question Repacing gear shifter handle

Hi
I just got a new gear shifter handle for my 89 VW fox but I want to know how to get the old one off without running the risk of messing up the gears, the factory one is on there pretty good. Also, I'd like to be able to take the new one off when my car finally dies, any suggestions?

Do you want to removing the stock shift knob?
As far as i know, you just pull up as you twist the knob counter-clockwise to loosen it.

Take a big pipe wrench to it! That's what I've always used if I couldn't get one off. As far as messing up the gears, I wouldn't think you'd do too much damage. You've gotta think of all the hell those gears go through every time you pop the clutch, and don't even try to tell me you haven't done that. Transmissions aren't made of plastic... don't worry too much about breaking it.

Smile Thanks for the advice!

Thanks for the advice from u both,
I did get the factory knob off although it was really tough. Now its got a nice new custom VW shifter with the logo on top. And I never do pop the clutch, Ha Ha,:alien: just kidding. The reason I said about damaging the gears is because someone i know tried to force their car into a lower gear and messed up where the friction point was.
thanks
Sammie
