Hi everyone: I have a leak from the lower manifold gasket. Engine is a V-6 3100 3.1L. It will cost me 379.00 in labor and with parts a total of 508.00. Can anyone please advise me on how to maybe save some money on this repair? The mechanic showed me the leak with a flashlight, but I was wondering if a turn of a bolt somewhere would solve this or am I doomed to this repair?

Any help would be appreicated

PS.. please advise very soon, car is sitting at the repair shop and they are waiting for my answer if they get the money or not.!!!

hi , i had a 1996 beretta z26 with the same motor and the same problem , mine went at 167,000 miles. First i thought that i could deal with putting coolant day after day but that got expensive. I tried something i bought at autozone it was supposed to help seal it but it didnt work, so i ended up just fixing it after all. im not sure if a turn of a bolt would help but if you get a haynes manual it might show the intake breakdown it might work , or you could try using some additives and see what happens but any further delay to the gasket could lead to extra problems with the engine, so it might be good to get it fixed as soon as possible. Try calling around make sure your getting the best price you might be able to save some money.
good luck with the car

Hi Crow: I went to the mechanic and took what was said in this forum with me.. He was right about what was wrong so I'm having him fix it. Apparently this 3100 3.1 engine is prone to this trouble. I hope he dont rip me off some other way. I just dont trust mechanics any more..... Been through so so many over my life time. Makes me want to go to mechanics school, but I dont like grease on my hands:grinyes:

well if he does offer a waranty i would definetly get it in writing, they should offer at least a 1 year waranty.

Hi crow: He gave a warrenty of a year. Things seem to be fixed. And the air condioning is now working, he found the fan on the compressor wasnt working..Since it gets blazing hot here in the summer, I will be happy to have the ac working.

have a good one

Thanks Crow: The ac is working and everything went well this weekend. We drove it alot to see what she'd do :grinyes: . I really like grand prix's. This car has 147,000 on it and still smooth running. I did see a bit of oil dripping on some cardboard I put down. If you was standing in front of the car looking at it, it would be on the left side. Not sure if it might be something simple. Maybe the oil filters on that side.

Have a great day
Thanks for your advise!!!
