service engine light on

i have a 2000 granprix gt 3800 , the problem is the service engin light stays on and when i try to have it scanned the scanner does not pick up power from the plug in the scanner plugs into .anybody ever here of such a problem thx for any help

Power to the odb-ii ALDL port is provided via the cigarette lighter fuse so check that to see if blown.
