Transmission: Reverse dosn't work.

I want to start by saying this: I'm your class 16 year old idiot when it comes to driving. I know NOTHING about cars, hence my having issues like the one I'm about to describe. So please go easy on me :p

I have a 1993 Saturn SL (i think) with an automatic transmission. I was going about 60mph and i accidentally shifted into reverse. (please don't ask how/why.....)

Anyway, everything works just fine except for reverse. When i put the car in reverse it just makes soft of a loose grinding sound. Like i said, everything else is fine as far as the transmission.. Or so it seems..

So does this sort of thing cost a lot to fix? Am i looking at having to replace the entire transmission? I'm guessing that would cost more than the car. Anyway, can one gear just be fixed? Is it extensive?

Thanks in advance!!

The transmission is probably toast. It would be too extensive to just repair one thing in the trans. Might as well go for the full rebuild or find a good used replacement. Make sure you shop around for the labor and do not go to a big chain transmission shop like Aamco.
