Etiquette for turning down a race?JekylandHyde 05-05-2007, 08:26 PM I don't street race, but as you can imagine, my car tends to get some attention on the street. My question is this: Sometimes when I am cruising on a highway and I am maintaining 66-70 mph, and I start to catch up to a slower moving "street racer," as I pass them, they gun it to catch up and then just sit there next to me in the right lane. I am not going to race, what do I do: (a) maintain speed, keep eyes straight ahead on road (b) make eye contact with them and somehow (how?) gesture that I do not race I tend to do (a), but I do not want to come off like a jerk that is ignoring another enthusiast. However, I rather do that than risk making eye contact with a potential jerk. So what to do? nissanfanatic 05-05-2007, 11:43 PM Just the other day when I was taking my car to be shipped home, I had a guy that lives on base with me do just as you described.. I simply looked at them and shook my head.. Then rolled down the window, they said "let me hear the turbo.." I just told them no and then told them I can't risk the ticket... They understood.. I wouldn't view it as offensive if someone shook their head saying no and giving a reason like that.. But I love the jackoffs that shake their head like they are so above you.. I usually lose traction in second gear just so they know that I'm not driving some BMW that barely traps over 95mph like they are... Musashi3000GT 05-06-2007, 12:56 AM turn......down......a race? Ive never heard of this! I didnt know you could turn down a street race just assumed I was supposed to mesh the gas each time. damn, when did they invent this? Well me thinks this is another one for The Men Of The Automotive Order. Lets come up with a propper way to do this and make it Carlaw. What i usually do (If I have a chance to speak to them) Is tell them straight up you dont want to race. You cant sound like a pompus asshole who feels like it'd be a waste of time. just say "nah man, not today, dont wanna risk it" or "thanks guy(s) but Its been a rough day and I just dont want more shit to go bad" or "Im sorry bro, Ive dogged the hell out of it all day and just wanna relax now". most guys will undersatnd you and back off. Ricers will be like "okay pussy" but w/e. If I cant talk to em like if its a highway encounter dont ignor them, Thas rude, dont avoid them by hitting the brakes or switching lanes! were all car guys and we are kindread spirits. Just smile and wave your finger :nono: I remember a kid in a S14 with a weak sounding SR20 wanted to go. I kept smiling and saying "nah man, not tonight" but he was damn persistent so finally I put my hand to my ear like a "let me hear it" gesture and he revved it and BOVed. I smiled and clapped and gave him a thumbs up. He gave me a thumbs up back and left. Street racing is psycologically nothing more then penis envy! you want to feel greater then the other guy, you want to be acknowledged as a threat or a supremacy to the other competitor. as such in order to please them but not belittle ourselves either all you have to do is acknowledge thier pressence and they will feel acomplished. JekylandHyde 05-06-2007, 06:58 AM Musashi3000GT, parts of your post were some of my favorite things I have ever read on here ... lol ... thanks. :) I do have a "RASR - Racers Against Street Racing" sticker on my B-pillar, but I doubt it can be read from car to car while driving unless you know the logo/trademark. -The Stig- 05-06-2007, 09:52 PM You could always do what I do... and sell your cool cars and drive a pickup truck that gets no attention. Not even from the ladies. :( Man... last time I ever listen to advice given by me. Only fun I have is when it rains... drifting a long wheel base pickup truck with slow reacting steering is.. challenging to say the least. http://smiliesftw.com/x/PhuLessVictory.gif (http://smiliesftw.com) jeepgclwj 05-06-2007, 11:22 PM I'm that arshole that tries to instigate races with cars I know I cant beat. It just makes it way more fun to see faster cars go. I have had the recent pleasure to get a newer "Vette" and a LS-1 GTO to show me what time it was. Both had work done and sounded incredible. Hearing the sound of those cars at WOT is like pimp slapping a punk-ass with a handful of baby powder. It never gets old.... side note. the vette had pillar gauge and had ZO7 on the side were ZO6 would be.:dunno: any idea what it was other than a poser...... -The Stig- 05-06-2007, 11:25 PM Might of been one of these: http://www.motorsporttech.com/print/mti_z07_brochure01.html jeepgclwj 05-07-2007, 01:43 PM WOW!!! nice find.. I think I may have run into one of those. It was yellow and sounded real bad ass considering he went WOT on me on the interstate at about 70mph. I might as well have been in reverse. "uvettcha" was his personal tag. Just makes me want GTO, or a Vette or a LS1 f-body even more.... -The Stig- 05-07-2007, 05:46 PM save your lunch money... with them getting older each year, they're coming down in price. Scary thought is, as they get cheaper to buy younger kids can afford them. Which means you might see an influx of highschool kids driving LS1 powered F-body cars more often that you normally would. Which, goes without saying, that there'll be more races to be had... but done by less competent drivers. Some F-bodies will be modified by previous owners as well. In the next few years we might see a increase in teenage auto accidents which will always be attributed to 'racing' even if it's not the cause. Or maybe I just think to much. :uhoh: pimp349 05-08-2007, 01:15 PM ...Or maybe I just think to much. :uhoh: No you're right...these days when anything happens with younger drivers behind the wheel the authorities always assume they were racing, or at least speeding... nissanfanatic 05-08-2007, 06:24 PM I wouldn't go as far as to say young drivers, but rather dumb drivers.. In the field of drivers, there are good, and there are bad. Age is not the classification criteria.. Young or old, I can tell a shitty driver. Good or bad driving, I cannot tell their age.. -The Stig- 05-08-2007, 08:01 PM True, young doesn't mean bad by definition. But I guess what I'm getting at is inexperianced drivers getting behind the wheel of a car that can easily turn around and bite you in the ass if you get a bit over confident. I'll admit I was a slow driver when I first got my license, driving around in a '70 Nova with a decent little 350ci V8. It wasn't anything to go "OMG!" at, it made cool sounds and it was primer grey... which makes it either a piece of shit or a cool car... or a combination of the two. Anywho, it took me a while before I'd got to where I would actually drive it fast. Most of the time the car scared me... not because it was fast. But because it was prone to breaking shit. Like the time I raced a girl in a Grand Am... the Nova made short work of the 4 cylinder Pontiac, but when the throttle return spring broke off and the throttle stayed wide open. I was a bit perplexed on how to shut the damn thing off and stop. Threw it in neutral and killed the motor before it overrevved. Which is bad for the camshaft to suddenly stop it like that... but I didnt care at that point. (although I did end up ruining that camshaft later on.. flattened a lobe, which caused it not operate properly so it'd slap the valve around... sounded awesome.) ... well enough babbling... my point is somewhere in that resemblance of a coherent thought... find it if you want and take it for what you will. -Josh- 05-09-2007, 12:25 AM I just tell people to piss off, it's not to subtle but it gets your point across. 98BlackTransAm 05-09-2007, 04:49 AM save your lunch money... with them getting older each year, they're coming down in price. Which means you might see an influx of highschool kids driving LS1 powered F-body cars more often that you normally would. yeah they are going down in price, but hopefully most parents have enough common sense to not let their kids get a fast car for their first...altho there was a kid at my old high school whose parents bought him a dodge viper, so apparently common sense isn't directly correlated with wealth :disappoin SSkull 06-07-2007, 04:34 AM I'm sure it's not just the younger drivers. I mean, I'm only 18, just barely at that. I've had my license since I was 16. And I drive a 2007 Corvette. Before that I had a 3000gt as my first car (base model). But out of all the time I've been driving, I've never raced. I mean there are always plenty of times when I have a strong urge to just gun it, but I haven't even done that in my old 3kgt. Anyways, I guess what I'm trying to say is that chalk it up to stupidity for the most part to those that show others the downside to street racing. Although I'm sure young people that get behind a steering wheel of a powerful car just feel like they're invincible. That's just my input though, nothing big. pimp349 06-08-2007, 12:45 PM I mean, I'm only 18, just barely at that. I've had my license since I was 16. And I drive a 2007 Corvette.
