I am told there is a 5 series convertible in Eurpoe. Is that true and does anyone have any info on it?

I'm not in Europe, but I've never heard of that. I have, however, heard that a 6-series coupe & convertible may be in the works for 2004-ish, based on the 5-series platform. That'd be awesome, if it's true.

It is not 5 series convertible in Europe. But BMW made a proto type of a convertible on the 5 series E34 in 1987/88. But of course sombody can have made a convertible at a small factory or somthing, but they have never been produced fore sale.

The 5 series and 8 series convertibles are both available by a small car manufacturer in the south of France. They are limited edition cars built to order only.

I know this as I have seen both in Nice, France two years.

I managed to speak to the owner (after he got off his yacht!) of the 8 series his car was ordered new from BMW (one of the last 8's to be built) and shipped straight to this custom builder. The car was then striped down and the custom electric roof was installed which folds flush under a hard cover (CLK style).

The work voids the dealer warranty instantly so the company instate their own warranty and have to legally rebadge the car as a Monte Carlo (I think this was the name of the model not the manufacturer).

Cost? - $125,000 US!!!!!

The E39 I saw (I didn't see the owner) also had a soft top with a modified boot. This car was also rebadged and painted in a jade green colour with a green fabric roof.

The five series in my opinion is one of the best looking cars out there, but doesn't a four door convertible just look weird, no matter how nice the car looks? Can you post any pics?
