1995 Grand Am - No spark - will not startweloveiggy 04-27-2007, 09:26 AM 1995 Grand Am, 3.1L New plugs & wires about 7-8 months ago. No recent work done or changes made. Car started hesitating a couple weeks ago, I suspected an injector problem or perhaps a bad coil or control module. Stopped in the middle of the road last night, started briefly, but since then, the engine turns but won't fire. No spark. Had the ignition control module checked & replaced all three coils. No change. I pulled a plug, it looked a little black, but otherwise ok & I could easily smell gas on it. I didn't see any obvious damage to any wiring. My next move is going to be a crank sensor. From what I can tell, there may be more than one. Is there one of them that is more likely to cause this problem? This is my wife's daily driver, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! xeroinfinity 04-27-2007, 02:38 PM Check the 24x its on the pass side behind the crank pulley. The other sensor, which is a 7x, is on the back side of the block... Kinda hard to get to, but the wire plug connector should come up to the top to the ICM, so does the 24X. weloveiggy 04-27-2007, 02:58 PM Thanks! Do I need to pull the serpentine belt & harmonic balancer to replace the 24x? Everything I've read makes it seem like the 3x sensor on the block is easier to change. I guess if it could be either one, I'd like to start with the easiest & work my way from there. xeroinfinity 04-27-2007, 09:09 PM To replace either does require some disassembly. It would be better to test them, but its time consuming and requires all the plugs be removed, a voltmeter, and an assortment of other tools. I dont know the specs right off, should be close to the newr GA's. Try this link (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=663352), it'll give you an idea of what you need to do. weloveiggy 05-05-2007, 05:27 PM To recap..the car still has no spark. I have replaced the following... Plugs, wires, coils & both crank sensors. I had the control module tested. I'm at a loss with this one. xeroinfinity 05-05-2007, 06:33 PM Well looks like you have replaced every thing. Might just replace the ignition control module. If it checked good then your pcm/ecm may be faulty. Good Luck weloveiggy 05-05-2007, 10:49 PM Thanks. I have a friend with the same year, make, model, engine & accessory options, that is junking her car. I'm going to try a PCM swap. Where is the SCM located? I'll swap that too. weloveiggy 05-07-2007, 12:15 PM OK, I replaced the PCM & no change. The battery was running low, so I pulled it. In the process, I noticed that one of the terminals had a spot that was slightly melted. I took the battery somewhere & they said it was bad, so I had it replaced. I do remember my wife telling me that her friend used her car to jump start her truck one day the week before all this trouble. If someone hooked up the cables wrong & slightly melted one of the terminals, what else may have fried that would cause the problems I'm having. As far as I know, I've either had tested, or replaced everything I can think of that would cause the car to have no spark. xeroinfinity 05-07-2007, 05:54 PM Through all of this hav you checked for any trouble codes? If anything was burnt from a bad jump, I'd look at the 3-4 fuseable links by the starter. I think thier might be one on a line from(or too) the alternator. Also is the fuel pump working , or do you hear it run when the key is turned on? It could hav a passlock issue :dunno:  weloveiggy 05-09-2007, 11:48 AM UPDATE: The car has spark, but still won't start. It's getting gas & fuel pressure is OK. It has been suggested to me that the timing chain/belt may have skipped and/or jumped causing the valves to open/close at the wrong time, as well as affecting the ingition timing. How can I check this without disassembling everything? Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
