Grand am turns over, will not fire.
Ok ive tried everything, this car will not start. Backfires once in a great while.
I have it down to thinking its a crank position senser but unsure.
2002 pontiac grand am with 60k miles on it, 2.2l ecotec.
It seems to get spark and fuel, strong vacuum on throttle body but will not start.
I changed/ replaced the following on this car.
Last year the lock cylinder was changed so we dont think this is the problem due to spark and fuel coming to the engine.
tried resetting passlock but same thing getting spark and fuel.
-replaced the head
-replaced the ignition coil pack
-checked the fuel injectors, all work.
-fuel pump works
-drained gas thinking watered down gas and put new 89 octane in it.
-Complete timing job with new sprockets, chain, tensioner and guides.
-new sparkplugs
if anyone has any other idea's as to what I need to do please tell me. I am running out of options.
Thank you.

Re: Grand am turns over, will not fire.
Welcome to AF.
Was the car running after those parts were replaced ?
What kind of shape are the boots on the spark plugs?

Re: Grand am turns over, will not fire.
the car use to run fine until I hit these railroad tracks a while back. The next morning I started the car it fired on two cylinders and went a max speed of 30 mph, I didnt think it was firing wrong I thought it was because it was cold lol. Anyway the boots are new, came with the coil pack. We replaced all that stuff and it does the same thing, will not start.

Re: Grand am turns over, will not fire.
Well sounds like you might have other problems since you say you did the tracks
Have you looked under the car for a cracked oil pan?
Or is the trany pan caved in ?

Re: Grand am turns over, will not fire.
You sure its getting spark, ive replaced alot of ignition control modules on the 2.2L. Usually when they go they take out two cyl, and then eventually i guess it could take out all four cyl.

Re: Grand am turns over, will not fire.
nothing is cracked under the car, when I hit the tracks it just jarred the suspension a bit, the car never grounded out. its a new ignition control and we pulled it off the motor and checked for spark. so I dont know what it could be, thats why I was wondering if we messed up that crank sensor, it acts like its out of time but we have it set in perfect time. The haynes manual said something about the crank position sensor tells the pcm the firing sequence/order also, which is also why I thought it might be this. We spent a fortune on it already so another $20 for a sensor isnt going to make me much more upset then I already am. If anyone has any other idea's on what to check please let me know.
Thanks.

Re: Grand am turns over, will not fire.
If you suspect the crank position sensor then I'd test it.
Your manual will have the specific procedures, pretty easy.
Good Luck

Re: Grand am turns over, will not fire.
Try this its for the 97-00 engines but relativly the same throughout the models.

Also check the index in the back of your book for "crankshaft position sensor".

Re: Grand am turns over, will not fire.
well, it wasnt the crank position senser but now even more problems, a punch was left in the crank pulley when I was tightning the pulley on it and my dad tried starting it without checking for the punch. So anyway punch bent, timing cover broke.
We tried redoing the timing yet again and still nothing. Discovered low compression also, had like 80 - 75 - 100 - 70 or something like that, I am not quite sure but it was lower than it should be. The head was replaced, valves were fine, When We pulled the head off the pistons looked great, we know the rings dont leak because antifreeze got in the cylinders when we pulled the head and did not drain into the block.
I am completely puzzled so if you have any new idea's please let me know and Ill try when I get a new front cover or take it to work and try to repair it.
oh also would this car sence low oil pressure or low coolent and cause it not to run?
