need help

i have a 1996 pontiac Grand Am GT i rebuilt put it back in the car and got it started and it revs up to about 3500 to 4000 rpm's. the timing is right and i have check just about every thing i can think of if anybody can help please get back with me

Welcome to AF.

Check for vacumm leaks around the intake especially.
Make sure all the components are pluged in.

Probly a faulty Idle air control - IAC.

Check that its working and that the port it sets in is clean a free of carbon deposits.
